Chocolate Covered Strawberry Protein Shake and Pumpkin Pie Protein Shake Recipes

Hey y'all!

I have REALLY sucked at blogging this spring! I mean, I've been working a lot for work, but sometimes blog posts (like this one) don't take long to write! I have so much I want to share from the last couple of months!

Today though, I am checking in on one of my 30 by 30 List. The one that I feel so awkward talking about! I've been working towards losing 50 pounds, and I am 15 down! I'm joining a new gym this week (sometimes I get anxiety in a big gym that is new to me, I feel like everyone is staring at me!), and I have been practicing clean eating as much as possible!

I'm currently doing the Arbonne Challenge. It is a clean eating challenge that incorporates protein shakes. Honestly, I have tried a lot of different proteins. I'm really loving the Arbonne protein shake mix. It keeps me feeling full for longer and more satisfied after eating it. My next favorite would be beachbody (they have a lot of different flavors).

Personally, I can't just add water and ice to the protein, so I've been looking up recipes to try and now I really look forward to my morning and evening shakes! I have a huge sweet tooth, so I am able to make the chocolate shakes very dessert like so I'm not craving sweets! Here are two that I've made this week that are super easy!

Chocolate Covered Strawberry Shake
-2 scoops of chocolate protein
-1-2 handfuls of frozen strawberries
-1 cup unsweetened almond milk (only 30 calories per cup! - sometimes I add more if the shake is a little too thick)
-fiber (if you want - this is what helps me stay full for so long!)

Pumpkin Pie Shake
-2 scoops of vanilla protein (or 1 scoop vanilla, one scoop chocolate - depends on how pumpkiny you want it!)
-1 cup unsweetened almond milk
-Frozen pure pumpkin (I get the pure pumkin in a can and freeze it in cupcake pans so I have little pucks of pumpkin - I usually use two pucks per smoothie)
-a dash of pumpkin pie spice
-fiber (again, only if you want it)

Just toss all of the ingredients in the blender and that's it! See? SUPER easy!

Hope y'all are having a great day!

Until next time (and I promise it will be much sooner!),

Finding Slope: Deleted Scene

Hey y'all!

I hope your weekends were fabulous!

As I've mentioned in posts before, I love reading. I could probably take a week of PTO and read the entire time, never leaving my house. My favorite type of book though, is a series with characters that I can relate to. One where I feel like I become friends with those characters as the series continues.

I went to college with Erin and she is a fellow Kappa Delta alum, so when I found out she was writing a series, I was ALL about it. In her first book, Taking Flight, I was so excited to love her characters and the story line. In the second book of the series, Making Headlines, I loved the characters even more and became completely engrossed in their stories. It helps that a lot of the situations they are in are incredibly easy to relate to.

When I found out that Erin was writing a third book, Finding Slope, I was super excited! And then when I heard that she was doing a blog tour, I knew I wanted to be a part of it.

My FAVORITE part of reading blogs on books is seeing the deleted scenes. How would it have changed the book if the author had used that one instead? Was there more that I'm missing and would have wanted to see? Erin is letting me share with YOU a deleted scene from Finding Slope with a little information from the author herself! Check it out!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I wrote this scene, I could not figure out what to make my characters talk about. This particular scene features the Mizzou group—and Luke’s little brother Kip, who you’ll get a pretty big dose of in this sene—which means that they’re all friends who already know each other. So, what would a group of friends on spring break talk about?

The answer is anything.

And that can be a very overwhelming answer for a writer.

I tried a whole bunch of different things, but nothing seemed right. I hated this scene. In fact, I tweeted one day about it saying something along the lines of, “My characters are stuck in a scene. Considering writing, ‘And then a meteor fell on them. The end.’”

But of course I couldn’t do that to them.

So I ended up writing a scene that involved a discussion of pregnancy and parenthood—this is derived from my own life, where many of my friends are starting families and it seems as if a new pregnancy is announced every day.

The scene never really sat right with me. I knew it felt awkward. Perhaps disingenuous. But I’d had such a hell of a time writing it, that I left it as it was, telling myself that thinking about the future and wondering about it aloud with your college friends was normal. Everyone thinks about it, after all. So, even though I didn’t love the scene, I left it as it was when I sent the draft to my editor, the oh-so-wise-and-wonderful, Tara Quigley.

She attacked this scene. It made her uncomfortable. It made her think that maybe one of the characters was going to get pregnant. That this conversation was a foreshadowing, and while she read the rest of the book, she kept thinking about the possible pregnancy and when it would show up.

But it never did. Because spoiler: none of my characters announce they are pregnant in this book.

So, Tara told me to cut it. Change it. Whatever I wanted to do to it so long as it went away.

And I knew she was right. So I changed it and am much, much happier with the way the scene reads in the final version. But, that doesn’t mean I won’t share the deleted version with you, giving you a little glimpse into the world of writing, editing, and figuring out what works and what doesn’t.

So, without further ado, please feast upon this sucker and be very glad that you won’t have to read this in the final version of Finding Slope.

Willa

I watch Sophie and Luke in the kitchen, mixing brownies and stealing kisses. Despite how much she says she hates the cold and snow, and how sore she is from skiing, she is glowing with happiness.

Maybe the glow is because she’s pregnant.

Oh God, why did I think that? I force my brain to think of anything else and I tell whoever it is that controls fate and things of that nature that I take it back, in case it turns out that I can will life into existence via my best friend’s uterus.

My name is Willa, after all.

I push all thoughts of pregnancy and babies out of my mind and try to focus on my book.

Besides, I know way too much about her and Luke’s habits than to think that there’s any way in hell that they’re pregnant. They are very cautious.

SHUT UP, BRAIN.

“You okay over there?” Kip asks.

“Huh?”

“You just said, ‘Shut up, brain,’ out loud.”

“I did?”

“You did.”

He comes over to sit by me on the couch and I move my legs to make room for him. “So, I’m guessing you weren’t reading,” he says, eyeing my latest true crime book.

“I was. Earlier.”

“But now you’re telling your brain to shut up.”

“Apparently.”

“So what were you thinking about?” Kip asks.

“If I tell you, you can’t breathe a word to anyone.”

“I am so excited about what you’re about to tell me,” Kip says.

I look around and lower my voice before saying, “I noticed how happy Sophie looks today, and my brain immediately thought, ‘Maybe she’s pregnant and her hormones are making her happy because she’s growing a baby.’”

Kip roars with laughter. I hurriedly shush him, but there’s no point. Sophie and Luke are looking this way, as are Kate, Adam, and Courtney, who are playing a card game at the kitchen table.

“What’s going on in there?” Luke asks.

“Oh, nothing,” Kip says. “Willa is practicing her stand-up routine. She’s really funny.”

“I’m going to kill you,” I whisper to him.

“I’ve got this,” he whispers back.

“She has her moments,” Sophie says, peering at us over Luke’s shoulder. She searches my face, which I can feel is bright red, narrows her eyes for a second, but then says, “I think it’s hot tub time. Anyone else?”

Everyone scrambles to their feet, excited for the glorious feeling that is sitting in a vat of hot water when it’s below freezing outside. When we’re all changed and finally relaxing in the hot tub, we make small talk about our days on the mountain. Sophie marvels at how there are toddlers who are skiing blues and how weird it is to see them with their tiny skis whipping around the slopes.

“Were you that little when you started?” Sophie asks me.

“Not that little,” I say. “I think I was five when my parents took me for the first time.”

“So crazy. I know that these two,” she says, pointing to Luke and Kip, “were basically born with skis on their feet, but I figured that was a requirement if you’re going to grow up in Colorado.”

“You’re exactly right,” Luke deadpans. “Colorado law requires babies be born with skis on their feet.”

Kip catches my eye, obviously thinking about my comments, and I flush all over again. Then he says, “So, what my brother is saying is that you better prepare yourself, Sophie.”

She blanches and the rest of us go silent, with me staring daggers at Kip, before Sophie recovers and says, “Well, that’s going to be one hell of a labor, having a kid with skis on its feet and a cowboy hat on its head.”

Luke and Adam roar with laughter and I shake my head at her. Sophie rolls her eyes and then Luke leans over and plants a kiss on her temple. “It’s going to be a long time before we consider that,” he says. “But thanks for the visual of an infant with skis and a cowboy hat.”

“I guess that means our kid would have a football helmet and cleats,” Adam says to Courtney.

“Ew, we cannot have this conversation,” she says.

“It’s a joke.”

“But still,” she says. “I’m nineteen years old. All talk of babies, joking or otherwise, needs to be delayed for at least five more years.”

“Just five?” I ask. I know that a lot of couples get married right out of college and start families immediately, but five years doesn’t seem that far away.

“Five at minimum,” she says. “Can you imagine being a mom within the next five years? Because I sure as hell can’t. I’m barely responsible enough to take care of myself, let alone a tiny human.”

“I cosign that,” Kate says. “There’s no way I’ll be doing anything until I’m out of medical school and finished with residency.”

“Okay,” I say. “All this talk of babies is creeping me out. I’m not nearly grown-up enough for this conversation.”

“None of us are,” Sophie says.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What do y'all think?? I can really relate to the scene, because like Erin (and because we have a lot of mutual friends), I am getting news what seems like every other day that a friend is having announcing their pregnancy. But based on the age of the characters, I think she made a great call!

You are Enough

Hey y'all!

I haven't been around much lately in the blogging world because it's our busy season at work and I've been studying for exams again. I've been out of town for work, a wedding, and we've had guests multiple weekends for a concert and to hang out, a couple of birthdays to celebrate, and a trip to Orlando for us (blog post coming soon). So if you've been wondering where the heck I've been, that's where!

I've been attending Church on the Move for a few months now and while many of the sermons have been wonderful, one from a couple weeks ago really got to me and I think it would hit home with pretty much anyone. I'll post a link to the sermon at the end of this, so I won't dig into the actual sermon too much, but I want to share what I got out of it.

Pastor Ethan asked us "Who has access to your story, your struggle and your secrets?" Your story is your past. Your significant other hopefully knows your story, but what about a close friend? Sometimes it is good to have someone outside of your marriage to be there to talk to (because let's be honest, men just don't get women and women don't get men on a lot of things). Do you have someone you trust who knows about your story?

Your struggle is what you are going through now. Every single day we go through things. Sometimes they are amazing, uplifting things, but sometimes there are days that quite frankly suck. Do you have someone you can share those times with? If you don't share those things, why? There are four main reasons that Paster Ethan broke down for us. Here's what I thought about each one/comments from the sermon.

1. I can handle it on my own - Oh hey, yeah I think that ALL the time. "I've got this, I don't need anyone else." Being independent is great, but you know what is better? Having someone who you can tell what is going on. They don't have to fix it or even offer advice, but sharing how you feel can really make any situation better. Or if too much is on your plate at work, speak up (I'm working on this one). Someone else might have a really light load and be able to help.

2. I've been hurt  - Y'all, it's hard when you've been burned to put yourself out there again. I'm not just talking romantic relationships, I'm talking any kind of relationship (friendship, coworkers). If you've tried to talk to a friend before about something that's bothering you and they blew you off saying to get over it, yeah, it's going to be hard to open up again. If you worked your butt off for a boss of yours and they weren't thrilled with the outcome, it's really easy to feel like you're never going to be good enough. But guess what? YOU ARE ENOUGH! Keeping people out is only hurting you, it might be hard and really suck, but you never know what amazing things you are missing out on because you are scared of being hurt again.

3. I don't want to burden anyone - How many times has that gone through my head? I often think, "I don't want to bring this up because I don't want to be a pain to my friend, they have enough going on without me spilling how I'm feeling to them." Pastor Ethan made an AWESOME comment on this exact thought - what makes it right for me to decide what a friend wants to know? By saying "I'm fine" or "It's whatever" I'm shutting out someone who really cares. Let them make that decision for themselves! I promise you, if you're my friend, I would much rather know what is going on in your life and to lend an ear than for you to hole up inside your head and make a situation worse.

4. I'm afraid of the consequences - What if something you did causes consequences in your life? If you hold on to it forever, it may make things worse for you in the long run than to share now. One thing Pastor Ethan shared was, "what if you're unhappy with your work and you voice it?". Let me start by saying, I love my job, so this particular situation doesn't apply to me, but are you hating your job and scared to say anything? Are you scared to say anything because you worry that you could get fired or looked down on for voicing that?

I am not sitting here saying that you should broadcast to Facebook how you feel every second of every day, just saying to have someone that you trust to talk to. If you want that person to be me, just shoot me a text that says "Can we talk?". I would love to be there for you. I am extremely blessed to have my "people" that know my story and are there when I need to talk about my struggles and secrets.

If you need something to listen to on your way to/from work this week, download the podcast here or watch at www.churchonthemove.com.

Anyway, this may be the deepest and longest blog post I've ever written, but I just had to share.

I hope you have a great week!

Hey There 2015!

Hey y'all!

Happy New Year to you and your family! 2014 went by insanely fast! I'm sitting here thinking of everything that we did in 2014, and the list is pretty long! Because of that, I have some pretty high expectations for 2015! You know my 30 by 30 list that I've been working on? I'm hoping to make a HUGE dent in it! Check out the items I'm hoping to cross off my list!
  • Go skydiving - My mom has committed to doing this with me this summer! (It's blog official, no backing out now!) I'm SO excited!
  • Run a 1/2 marathon - I'm running in the Disney Princess 1/2 Marathon in February and may do another one in the fall (depending if I want to die or not after the one this spring).
  • Read another 20+ books (I might need to up that number though. You might remember from this post that I read over 100 books in 2014!)
  • Pass the CPA exam - Two down, two to go! I'm planning to get this one done as soon as possible!
  • See New York City at Christmas - Ryan and I are planning to go next December! I can't WAIT to see the city at Christmastime. (Yes, I am aware they haven't even taken down this year's tree. Don't you steal my thunder on this! It's perfectly acceptable to count down for an entire year).
  • Go to a Houston Texans football game - Ryan and I are planning to make this one happen next fall! How awesome would it be if we got to knock out another one of my items and meet my favorite NFL player (J.J. Watt) at the same time?!? My chances are slim, but we will try!
  • Obtain my concealed carry license
  • Plant a tree and watch it grow - Since we live in a relatively new neighborhood, there aren't many trees around! I would love to plant a fruit tree! Now to research what kinds will grow in Oklahoma!
  • Lose 50 pounds - Yeah, I said it. It's going to happen. A lot of changes are going to have to take place to make this possible. The biggest one is that I gave up root beer. COMPLETELY. No more sugary pop for this girl. Every time I want a root beer, I have drank (and plan to continue to drink) a huge glass of water. It's amazing that I'm not floating away yet! I've already lost some weight, but I have quite a ways to go!
  • Plan & host a party - Ryan and I have a few friends who are having babies or weddings in 2015 and we are planning to host/co-host showers for a couple of them!
  • Volunteer with an organization that means something to me - I love the Girl Scouts and was a member all through school. I am trying to figure out the best way to get involved with them!
You never know, I might knock even more than this off my list, but I think this is more an acceptable starting point!

I have a few goals/resolutions that aren't on my 30 by 30 list that I want to share too!
  • As mentioned above, I gave up root beer. I gave up caffeine and diet coke about a year and a half ago and somewhere along the line I started drinking root beer (lots of sugar, but no caffeine). This is definitely a mind over matter thing!
  • Get to know more people at the church I've started attending a couple of months ago (Church on the Move). I really love it and I'm looking forward to getting to know more people this year!
  • Learn even more about how to utilize essential oils! I have truly loved getting to learn more about them and I know there are SO many things that oils can be used for that I haven't even touched yet!
  • Keep up with this blog! I've had so much fun sharing parts of our life with you and am looking forward to continuing that!
Do you have any goals or resolutions for the new year? I would love to hear them and help cheer you on and support you with those goals!

Until next time,

Rolled Sugar Cookies and Royal Icing

Hey y'all!

One of my favorite family holiday traditions is making sugar cookies! We always try to make royal icing, and it always ends up super thin and runny (boo!). This year, I have been following quite a few people who decorate the most GORGEOUS cookies, so I knew I had to step up my game if I was planning to post these babies on instagram. I decided to use new recipes from the ones that I normally use because I really wanted soft sugar cookies and I wanted a different icing (the one I used in the past had way too much almond or vanilla or something or another).

Rolled Sugar Cookies - I got my recipe here. They were super soft and tasted great! My only change to this recipe is that the thicker rolled cookies were much softer and I wanted to eat all of them, so you should probably do that. This recipe calls for an ungreased cookie sheet, but I used parchment paper which helped the bottoms become a really pretty light golden color.

Royal Icing - I started with Martha Stewart's recipe here. I will tell you to NOT use nearly as much water as she calls for. Honestly, I probably used half the water it called for and it still wasn't super thick. I would add a tiny bit at a time until you get the consistency you want.

This was my first time to really use the outline and flooding techniques successfully (honestly, I think I used to try the flooding without the outlining...P.S. that does NOT work). If you don't know how to do this, you want to have a thicker icing to outline your shape and then thin it out (i.e. add a tiny bit of water) to "flood" the outline. This results in a smooth even finish for your cookies! A couple of other things that I learned were that if there are bubbles in your icing, you can use a toothpick to pop those suckers and that you want to make sure the icing is COMPLETELY dry before you put them in tins (mine weren't 100% dry so some ended up having crinkles in the icing).

I recognized that I was too obsessive to get into decorating these intricately in the time frame I had to make them, so they ended up being relatively simple. Maybe next year when I can space out my baking days a little better! I'm still pretty proud of the outcome! What do you think?

By the time I got to the candy canes, I was just done with being a perfectionist and almost out of icing, so I just striped those with the light blue and red. They ended up being perfect for people who don't like as much icing though!

I think this may become an every holiday tradition, not just Christmas. Does your family make cookies for the holidays? Or have any special recipes?

Until next time,

How to Make a Liquor Bouquet

Hey y'all!

I hope that each of you had a very Merry Christmas! Ryan, Cash and I have had a great one! We have celebrated with his parents and get to celebrate with my parents and siblings early next week. I should tell you, I LOVE Christmas (I may have mentioned that before). I love crafting and baking and decorating and watching Christmas movies and listening to Christmas music! I think I drive my husband nutso with all the Christmas cheer. I thought I might share some of my projects from this year with y'all! Most of them could be adapted for different holidays/celebrations!

I'll be honest, I meant to post this before Christmas, but I got sick the week before and my productivity went out the darn window. Even when I started feeling better, I just wanted to sleep!

Today, I'm going to give you instructions on how to make a liquor bouquet! You can do the same thing with essential oil bottles (which would be SO cute), candy boxes, or really anything that is small.

I've made these little guys for multiple occasions and thought you might be able to use them too! This one was made for someone my dad works with who happens to like bourbon. You can use any liquor you want to! I personally like making it with all different kinds of alcohol so that the bouquet is very colorful from the different bottles.

Supplies:

  • 10 mini liquor bottles (plastic are best because they are light weight. You can also use more or less bottles if you want!)
  • Low temp hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Ceramic Pot (the size will depend on how many bottles you are using)
  • Styrofoam Ball to fit in the pot
  • Dowel rods (I used the 3/16th inch ones)
  • Crinkle filler
  • Acrylic paint (if you want to paint your pot)
Instructions:
  1. Paint your pot. For this particular project, I painted it gold. You don't have to paint the pot at all. The pots that Hobby Lobby had in stock all had scratches or dings on them, so I painted it to hide the imperfections. You don't need much paint to make a difference and the thinner the coats you put on, the faster it dries!
  2. Hot glue the styrofoam ball into the pot. This keeps it from moving around when you go to stick your "flowers" (a.k.a. liquor) into the pot.
  3. Glue the liquor bottles to the dowel rods. This is not the time to be stingy with the hot glue and you want to make sure it's completely dry before you can go to the next step.
  4. Cut the dowel rods to the desired length. I had no problem using scissors. They would make a significant dent in the rods and they would break at that point easily. You will want the rods to be shorter for the front of the bouquet and longer in the back.
  5.  Once the glue is completely dry, begin placing the dowel rods into the styrofoam base.
  6. Now you will want to add your crinkle filler, a bow if you want or a sign (happy birthday, congrats, etc)
Project COMPLETE! The first one I made took a little while to figure out placing, but this one took me about 25 minutes in total, including painting the pot. Did you do any fun crafts for the holidays? I would love to hear about them!

 Until next time,

One Amazing Year Later

Hey y'all!

I might not get through this post without crying, just warning you! Why? Because one year ago today, I got to marry my best friend. Everyone experiences a wedding in different ways, I'm going to share what I remember from our wedding day. This may also be the longest blog post ever, so no judgment if you don't read the whole thing!

I remember how much fun I had getting ready with my friends. Seeing all of my friends from different parts of my life all together made me so incredibly happy.

I remember how excited my mom was to zip me into my dress (and me thinking "Thank God it fits!").

I remember sitting in the car with my dad on the way to Ryan's and my first look. That may sound funny, but we sat in the car talking about random stuff for ten minutes on the way.

I remember that it was insanely cold and sleeting/drizzling most of the day, but when I stepped out of the car, I didn't even care that I was in a sleeveless dress, because after a year of having my dress, Ryan was finally going to get to see me in it.

I remember him turning around and seeing me for the first time. His reaction was exactly what I had hoped for (including a fist pump).

I remember how grateful I was for our AMAZING friends who were already fabulous, but got bumped up a notch for taking pictures in the cold with us.

I remember seeing the ceremony room and the reception room for the first time. It was everything I had imagined come to life.

I remember five minutes before the ceremony started, that something went wrong. My mom handled it soooo well knowing that not telling me what was going on would make things worse. Everyone was really concerned I was going to freak out and my reaction was "tell them to hurry up and fix it, I'm ready to get married!" (no freaking out necessary). I was so excited all day long. Some people get nervous, some cry, but me? I was so excited I couldn't stand still all day.

I remember standing with my dad waiting to walk down the aisle.

I remember seeing Ryan when the doors opened and walking down the aisle towards him. My dad and I were having a full on conversation down the aisle. Our guests laughed at what was being said "slow down Mad, he will still be there in a minute." Psh, I just walk fast anyway!

I remember saying our vows, exchanging rings, and praying together for the first time after that. Our vows were "I, Madalene, in the presence of God, take you, Ryan, to be my husband. All that I am I give to you, and all that I have I share with you Whatever the future hold, I will love you and stand by you, as long as we both shall live. This is my solemn vow."

I remember being told that Ryan could kiss the bride and being pronounced husband and wife and officially becoming Mrs. Bradley!

I remember our first dance, my dance with my dad, and Ryan's dance with his mom (which his dad cut in on to dance with Ryan - LOVED it!)

I remember telling Ryan to not shove the cake in my face and that he ate the cake because he knew it would make me happy (even though you don't even like cake).

And boy do I remember the reception. We had SO much fun with all of our family and friends. I wish we could have a huge party every year just so we could see everyone!

I remember standing in the reception hall listening to all of our guests call the hogs right before we exited the building.

It was the best night and we are so grateful for every single person who was able to help us celebrate.

In honor of our first anniversary, I have a few more things to add to our vows:
  • I promise to try harder to put the laundry up in our closets after it's clean (I have a tendency to leave it hanging up in the laundry room which is on the opposite side of the house for a week or so - oops!)
  • I promise to make you chicken nuggets and mac'n'cheese any time you want it
  • I promise to try to be the "bad cop" when it comes to Cash more often (surprise, I let him get away with everything)
  • I promise to not get mad when you add a pound of sugar to everything you cook.
  • I promise to not critique your driving (but only if you make the same promise in return!)
Most of all, I want to restate my promise to love you everyday for the rest of our lives. So much has gone on in the last year and I know the best is yet to come. I'm so happy that your cheesy pick up line worked and that you're my husband! I love you!
